Teacher (Wales) M2 take-home pay

Wales sets its own teacher pay through the Independent Welsh Pay Review Body, and its scale differs from England’s — it starts at M2, with no M1. The points below are the confirmed 2025/26 Wales main and upper pay range rates, in force from 1 September 2025. The 2026/27 Wales award is not yet confirmed: the Welsh Government is consulting on a 3.5% rise after the review body recommended 4.25%. Take-home is calculated at 2026/27 tax rates. TLR payments and ALN allowances are not included.

If your gross pay is £33,731 a year, after income tax, National Insurance and this pension contribution your take-home is about £25,472 a year — that’s £2,123 a month, £490 a week.

Take-home on £33,731 · 2025/26 Wales scale
£25,472 per year
£2,123 per month · £490 per week · £98 per day · £13 per hour
Year Month Week
Gross pay £33,731 £2,811 £649
Income tax −£3,649 −£304 −£70
National Insurance −£1,693 −£141 −£33
Pension contribution −£2,918 −£243 −£56
Take-home pay £25,472 £2,123 £490

Effective deduction rate: 24% of gross, leaving 76p in every pound. Marginal rate: 35%, so an extra £100 pay rise or overtime puts about £65 in your pocket.

Your Teachers’ Pension Scheme contribution is taken off your pay before income tax is worked out — what HMRC calls a net pay arrangement. Relief is automatic at your top rate and there is nothing to claim back. So the £2,918 contribution above cuts your tax bill by £584, and its real cost to your take-home is £2,334 a year. Calculators that tax your whole salary and then subtract the pension understate your take-home by that £584.

Figures based on the confirmed 2025/26 Wales teacher pay scale (4% award, effective 1 September 2025), with take-home calculated at 2026/27 tax rates. This page will be updated when the 2026/27 Wales award is confirmed. Actual take-home depends on your exact tax code, student loan plan, and whether you actually pay into the Teachers’ Pension Scheme.
