Band 8d NHS – Point 2 take-home pay

Band 8d covers consultant psychologists, chief nurses, estates managers and chief finance managers. The three spine points below are the published April 2026 national rates for England. High-cost area supplements are not included.

If your gross pay is £100,140 a year, after income tax, National Insurance and this pension contribution your take-home is about £61,128 a year — that’s £5,094 a month, £1,176 a week.

Effective deduction rate: 39% of gross, leaving 61p in every pound. Marginal rate: 50%, so an extra £100 pay rise or overtime puts about £50 in your pocket.

NHS Pension contributions are tiered by pay, and the tier applies to your whole salary rather than a slice of it. At £100,140 the 2026/27 member rate is 12.5%, which is what the table above deducts — most online calculators apply one flat rate to every band and get this wrong.

Your NHS Pension contribution is taken off your pay before income tax is worked out — what HMRC calls a net pay arrangement. Relief is automatic at your top rate and there is nothing to claim back. So the £12,518 contribution above cuts your tax bill by £5,035, and its real cost to your take-home is £7,483 a year. Calculators that tax your whole salary and then subtract the pension understate your take-home by that £5,035.

That matters more than usual at this pay point: on £100,140 you would expect to start losing your Personal Allowance at 60p in the pound. Because the pension is deducted first, your adjusted net income is £87,623 — under £100,000 — so you keep the full Personal Allowance and avoid the 60% band entirely.

Figures based on the NHS Agenda for Change pay rates April 2026 and the NHS Pension member contribution tiers effective 1 April 2026. Actual take-home depends on your exact tax code, Scottish or Welsh rates, student loan plan, and whether you actually pay into the NHS Pension.
