The 2026/27 rates behind these figures

England, Wales and Northern Ireland. Each rate applies only to the slice of income inside its band.

Band Annual income Rate on this slice
Personal Allowance Up to £12,570 0%
Basic rate £12,571 – £50,270 20% tax + 8% NI
Higher rate £50,271 – £125,140 40% tax + 2% NI
Additional rate Over £125,140 45% tax + 2% NI

Assumptions and method

All figures assume a standard 1257L tax code, England, Wales or Northern Ireland income tax rates, and Class 1 employee National Insurance (8% between £12,570 and £50,270, 2% above). They exclude pension contributions, student loan repayments, bonuses and benefits in kind — each of those changes the result, and all of them (plus Scottish rates) are handled by our free salary calculator. Monthly and weekly figures are the annual figure divided by 12 and 52. Rounded to the nearest pound.
